Great rat pen! Apr 25, 2010

I use this pen for my rats to give them some time outside of their cage, especially if I want to take them outdoors for some fresh air. One thing to keep in mind if you set it up in a circular shape (as it is designed to be used) and sit inside of it, there's not a whole lot of extra floor room for your animals. It's difficult for me to stay outside the pen while my rats are playing because when I go to step inside of it to put them back in their cage, I have to avoid stepping on them, but sitting in it makes for not much floor space--and also means I have to keep a much closer eye on my rats because they can hop right over the pen and escape if they crawl up on my shoulder. Another thing to keep in mind is that if you have young rats or smaller females, they can probably fit through the bars (the bar spacing is 1"). However, what I liked about the pen is that it does not have horizontal bars, so rats are not able to easily climb out (unless you're sitting inside of it). However, with supervision this is a great play area for small animals. I've also straightened it out into a square and set it up against the wall in a room to allow my rabbit to play in it while keeping him away from wires and furniture. I think using it in that manner (the pen acting as three sides of a square with the wall being the fourth) is preferable to the circular shape it's designed to be used in, because it allows for a lot more floor space. The pen seems quite durable and folds up very tightly for easy storage (it easily fits into a closet without taking up a whole lot of room).
