Not For My Pooch Aug 27, 2008
By PCNiles

I purchased this product after my toy poodle's leg was amputated due to a cancerous growth. I had hoped to use it near my bed so that my little 'girl' could continue getting up and down it with ease. I returned the PupSTEP within a week or two when it was apparent it was of no use to her. The design of this product is hugely flawed. The steps are too narrow in depth and width, which makes it likely the pet will fall off them.
The steps also appear to cant or tilt forward, but it's possible they are just aligned vertically straight up, which is just as bad. The design should have the wider and deeper steps tilting away from the incline, not towards it. I can't possibly see how any elderly or disabled dog or cat could ever learn to use them. My pooch certainly wasn't able to, despite repeated attempts to train her.
Not only is the design of the PupSTEP flawed, but it is aesthetically unpleasing. Downright cheap and crummy looking, to be blunt, but had it served its intended purpose, I would have overlooked that and kept it. As it was, I couldn't wait to return it and get a full refund.

Awful Product and Company Jun 22, 2010
By William McPhail Buyer Beware...Purchased the Solvit PupSTEP XT Pet Stairs, which are horrendus. They supposedly can support 250lbs., but my 40lb dog was afraid to use them. They are incredibly flimsy and cheap...DO NOT BUY!
When we called AbsolutelyPets to complained, they were unsympathetic. The product came pre-assembled and without a package, unless you consider the shipping box. Because we opened the "package" we would have to pay for the shipping and a 20% restocking fee. They do not stand behind their products...I will never purchase a thing from them again!

Exactly what I needed. Jan 05, 2011

These are apparently a slightly updated version of some Solvit steps that I've had for at least five years at the foot of my bed. I "promoted" that set to use with my new compact SUV that replaced a station wagon with a much lower step-up. That meant I needed something new for the foot of the bed. Since they're identical for all practical purposes, these work perfectly.
These are for larger dogs but I can see where small dogs in good health could use them with no problem. They are about the same height as regular human stairs, so if your pet is too small or too infirm to use steps of that size, these are probably not for you. If your dog can use stairs in your house and weighs less than 250#, these will work.
I noticed that my two dogs were reluctant to use the old steps to get in the new car, even though they were perfectly happy using them to get on the bed. I think it's because anything at all new to a dog is all-new, so my exhortations of "oh come on Buford, they're the same steps!!" didn't work. Expect to spend some time training and acclimating your pet(s) whether you're trying to get them in a bed, porch, car, couch, camper, whatever.
These are very durable, sturdy and stable...you'd have to try hard to damage them. Mine arrived after an Amazon-advised "unexpected delay beyond our control" via UPS in a box that had been punctured on two sides, crushed at the top and taped back together. The steps were perfect. They come completely assembled and ready for use. Another reviewer thought that was a bad thing and I am still scratching my head over that.
One minor complaint: I'm pretty sure I remember that my old ones came with four rubber feet with self-tapping screws to attach them to the bottom of the unit. You need them on slippery floors (in my case, on the concrete floor in the garage). Those are not included. A sticker mentions an optional "anti-slide kit" available from Solvit and gives a toll-free number to call to order one. I didn't bother because this new one is going on carpet in my bedroom. Home Depot probably has whatever's needed for a couple of bucks. Not a big issue for me, but come on Solvit - that seems a little cheesy.
I have to comment on a few negative reviews that describe the product as flawed in design, cheap, flimsy, etc. because of their pets' abilities or reactions to it. The steps are exactly as advertised. I lost my beloved Louise several years ago due to mobility problems; these had helped her for a while but eventually her condition deteriorated to the point that they were no longer helpful. That doesn't mean that the product became flawed or that the durability of it declined. It's the same sturdy, well-designed item today as it was then. All it means is that it was no longer a fit for Louise in her rapidly deteriorating condition, as much as I'd have liked for the problem to have been the steps or anything else.
If this fits your pet's size and physical condition, it is highly recommended.

Dog steps Sep 22, 2010
By Valerie Pellmann I like the steps they are very light weight but thought there would be a little bit more plusher carpet on them.

stairs for injured dog Mar 29, 2010
By Brett Melton

My dog pulled a ligament in front paw and was not allowed to jump up or down from my bed ( yes, my dog sleeps on my bed ). I bought this so that she could climb up and down. Turns out, she'll use it for going up, but not down. I think it's because the stairs are meant for smaller dogs ( my dog is a border collie and weighs around 65 lbs ). In all, I like the stairs but it seems my daughter plays with them more than my dog uses them.
