Dangerous gate extender Jan 27, 2007
By Dr. Duane The gate extender is dangerous and if a child pushes or pulls on it, it seperates from the "stairway special" model RSS-30 that it is designed to lengthen. The nuts pull out of the frame of the stairway special causing failure. The design is that the extension has holes that the bolts are placed through and they are anchored into the nuts within the frame of the main gate (stairway special). A child could die pushing on the gate. See image I posted on Amazon site of failed gate.

Very well designed Pet Gate Extension Nov 21, 2010
By J. Barklage We built our deck with a 4' wide set of stairs...anything less and it's very hard to carry up large grills, tables, etc... But, finding a pet gate that would work on such a wide stair opening was difficult. We found this Cardinal Pet Gate with the optional Extension a perfect choice. This gate system is very strong, coated to prevent rust from the elements, and the hinge system was easy to install. Plus the fact that this optional extension was available allowed us to have our staircase closed off. The Cardinal system has an adjustable main gate, which allows coverage over a nice range of openings. Our 4' opening was just a bit too big, thus we also purchased the extension, which bolts to the main gate making a nice solid gate. Make sure to purchase the stainless-steel screws so you can have rust free protection. One note, the locking mechanism seemed a bit weird when I first saw it, but once installed, it is great! We also use this as a baby gate and the locking mechanism can only be opened by pushing two outer taps at the same time that you lift the gate slightly...very difficult for a toddler...impossible for our cats!

Nice Gate Mar 15, 2010
By J. Gibbons I purchased this gate extension and gate as a pet gate for a cedar deck. I am pleased with the quality and value of both of these products. Installation was simple and took about 5 minutes to complete unassisted. I have no complaints.

nice gate but... Mar 01, 2010
By D. D. Bex This is the best gate I have ever had in the many years of trying every gate I thought looked like it would work. I was hesitant to order due to the other reviewer ordering and the bolts broke off and this could be a hazard at the top of the stairs. I was using for the bottom so thought I'd give it a try. Being that I always follow directions to a tee, we did this and installed the gate only to get to the end and realize that the extension directions were not there. So, we had assumed that the extension went last but apparently it went first and the gate instructions fail to mention this at all. Taking the gate apart the bolts broke and I had to call the company and email 3 times but I did get the bolts in the mail about a week later. Other than that it is doing good so far but it doesn't seem all that strong and makes me wonder how it would hold up to a kid trying to climb or stand on it. OPens nicely and my 19 month old didn't figure out how to open the latch like he did on octogon playpen gate thing. So that's good.
